Masks, despite ourselves, have become companions in our daily lives. Outside, at work, at the supermarket, in a shopping center, on a walk, on any occasion where there may be more or less close contact with other people.
Protecting yourself and others has become a fundamental weapon in the face of this pandemic.
Community masks as defined by the Prime Ministerial Decree of 04/21/2020 have been regulated by subsequent provisions of the Istituto Superiore della Sanità (ISS)*

“According to the Prime Ministerial Decree of 26 April, masks have become mandatory in confined or open spaces where it is not possible or guaranteed to maintain physical distancing...” “According to paragraph 2 of Article 3 of the same, community masks can be used, i.e. disposable masks or washable masks, even self-produced, in multilayered materials suitable for providing an adequate barrier and, at the same time, which guarantee comfort and breathability, adequate shape and adherence that allow covering from the chin to above the nose”. Masks represent a complementary measure for containing the transmission of the virus and cannot in any way replace physical distancing, hand hygiene and scrupulous attention in not touching the face, nose, eyes and mouth.
1)What is the difference between so-called community masks and surgical masks?
Surgical masks are medical masks, developed to be used in healthcare settings and certified based on their filtering capacity. They meet the characteristics required by the UNI EN ISO 14683-2019 standard and work by preventing transmission.
Community masks, as provided for by article 16 paragraph 2 of the Legislative Decree of 17 March 2020, are intended to reduce the circulation of the virus in daily life and are not subject to particular certifications. They should not be considered either medical devices or personal protective equipment, but a hygienic measure useful for reducing the spread of the SARS-COV-2 virus.
2) What characteristics must community masks have?
They must ensure an adequate barrier for the nose and mouth, must be made of multilayered materials that must not be toxic, allergenic or flammable and that do not make breathing difficult. They must adhere to the face, covering from the chin to the nose, ensuring comfort at the same time.
